Former North Kingstown student sues school committee, district leaders over ‘fat checks’

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A lawsuit has been filed by a former student at North Kingstown High School against current and former North Kingstown School Committee and district leaders.

This is the first lawsuit filed regarding the allegations of “fat checks” conducted by former North Kingstown basketball coach, Aaron Thomas.

“John Doe 42” and “Parent Doe 42” claim that “Thomas’ inappropriate and unprofessional conduct continued without any meaningful supervision, and indeed with the tacit approval of the administration for two decades of his employment.”

The lawsuit claims that the “Educator Defendants” did not give positions of power supervision/training. They also claim that officials ignored or silenced allegations of “fat checks” by Thomas, sometimes conducted while students were naked.

According to the lawsuit, John Doe 42 was asked to remove his clothes in front of Thomas in November 2015. It explained that Thomas positioned himself 12 to 15 inches from the boys’ genitals, and placed his hands inches from the boys’ genitals.

The lawsuit outlines counts of negligence, consortium, and indemnitor against current and former school district leaders.
