Former police officer pleads not guilty to rape charges

A former Pawtucket police officer charged with rape pleaded not guilty in Providence Superior Court on Wednesday.
Stephen Ricco is accused of raping and physically assaulting his girlfriend last Thanksgiving. A grand jury indicted the former Pawtucket police officer on a charge of first degree sexual assault, strangulation and two counts of simple domestic assault.
The judge ordered Ricco held without bail.
This is not his first run in with the law. Ricco, who retired from the police department in June, pleaded no contest to simple assault charges a year ago.
