PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Former Rhode Island Secretary of State Matt Brown is running for governor.

Brown’s campaign said Wednesday that he’s seeking the Democratic nomination. He had been exploring a run as an independent.

Brown was elected to a single term in 2002. He says the state has problems and he’s convinced of the need for change.

Brown ran in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in 2006 against Sheldon Whitehouse, and largely disappeared from politics after he bowed out.

He has been active with the anti-nuclear weapons group he co-founded, Global Zero.

At least three Republicans have announced challenges to Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo, including former jewelry company CEO Giovanni Feroce, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and House Minority Leader Patricia Morgan. Former Republican lawmaker Joe Trillo is running as an independent.
