Former substitute, Sunday school teacher arrested on child rape charges

FREETOWN, Mass. (WLNE)- A Taunton man was arrested on Monday after an investigation into several rape and assault charges.

Gilbert Hernandez, 55, was arrested by Massachusetts State Police on outstanding arrest warrants from Freetown and Lakeville Police Departments.

Freetown Police Chief Carlton Abbott said the department sought a warrant charging Hernandez with the following:

  • Rape of a child with force
  • Two counts of aggravated statutory rape of a child
  • Indecent assault and battery on a person aged 14 or over

Abbott said Hernandez was identified as the suspect in a lengthy sexual assault investigation involving a juvenile girl.

Based on the same investigation, Lakeville Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Hernandez as well.

Additionally, there are more pending charges from three other southeastern Massachusetts communities involving the same victim.

According to police, Hernandez is a former mail carrier, substitute school teacher, and a Sunday school teacher.

Hernandez was arrested and transported to the Fall River Justice Center for arraignment.
