Free Dental Clinic Filled to Capacity

The Rhode Island Oral Health Foundation's “Mission of Mercy”, a free public dental clinic being held on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3, has announced that the clinic is full and patient registration has closed for Saturday.

The clinic is being held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the CCRI Flanagan Campus, in Lincoln, R.I.

Thousands of people in Rhode Island do not have dental insurance. In recent years, some employers have cut dental insurance from plans offered to employees. Others simply cannot afford to pay for dental care.

The clinic, which is all volunteer, will assist patients on a first-come, first-served basis. The Oral Health Foundation estimates that around 300 people will receive free care at today's clinics.

The clinic has advised people who need services to return tomorrow.

ABC6 Reporter James Swierzbin reported Friday that some Rhode Islanders were desperate for dental care. Some were willing to wait in long lines, and even camp out overnight in order to receive care.

ABC6 News will have more on this story tonight on ABC6 News at six.
