Friends and family hold vigil in memory of teen killed in Providence shooting
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Friends, family, and loved ones poured onto the Gano Park basketball courts to mourn the loss of 19-year-old Deshaun Duré, Sunday afternoon.
Duré, a recent graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, is remembered by those who knew him as a strong student athlete, who played both football and basketball.
Friends of Duré organized a basketball game to raise money for his family, while also using it as an opportunity to support each other through their current pain and grief.
Noelia Tavera took part in organizing the game and vigil told ABC6, “He’s the last person that I would imagine this happening to. And it’s just really hard. I see that it affected my city and I kind of just wanted to come together and spread positivity.”
Organizers say they want to spread an important message about preventing violence, especially in the city of Providence.
Deshaun Duré was killed in this week’s triple shooting. Duré and a two others were shot while inside of a SUV near the Rhode Island School for the Deaf on Tuesday. He died from his injuries at Rhode Island Hospital later that night.
No arrests have been made at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
