Friends remember North Dighton teen killed

Community support is pouring in for the family of a North Dighton teen who was killed by his friend playing with a gun Tuesday night.

Police said 17 year-old Michael Pacheko was shot by his friend Joseph Medeiros, 18. Medeiros apparently told police that he was playing with the gun when it accidentally went off. In a panic, Medeiros ditched the illegal firearm.

On Wednesday, longtime friends of Pacheko, Lily Slavinand her mother Wendy Grant, are telling ABC 6 the kind of person Pacheko was.

"If you didn’t know him well, he would act like you were best friends," said Lily, a childhood friend in the same grade as Pacheko. "He was always someone that would comfort you. Even when no one else was listening, he would be listening and looking right at you making sure you knew he cared."

"He would walk in the door and say ‘hey mom I’m home’ and hang out with kids at the pool," said Wendy. "He was a good kid."

Lily said Pacheko, who many referred to simply as Mikey, was talking about future plans, as he was expected to enter his senior year at Dighton-Rehoboth High School.

"He was talking about how this year he didn’t go to his junior prom because next year is the important prom because seniors were top of the class and we were going to senior prom. But he never saw it," Slavin said, as she held back tears. "Dighton will have a hole in it for a while and it will forever be a quieter place without Mikey."

Several fundraising efforts are planned to help the Pacheko family.
