Gas prices in Rhode Island are trending upwards.

According to AAA New England, the average price of gas is at $2.99. That’s up to two cents from last week.

In Massachusetts, gas will cost you $2.98 on average.

It’s up three cents from last week in the Bay State.

Experts say the increase in gas prices is due to the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

More than 47 million people are expected to travel on the road on July 4th.

“The road trip is going to be strong,” AAA spokeswoman Jeanette McGee said. “Roads are going to be heavily trafficked so if you can get out of town early, or leave late, that’s probably going to be your best bet to avoid heavy, heavy traffic.”

A shortage of truck drivers is to blame for some gas stations running out of fuel.

Outages have been reported in the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, Colorado, and parts of the Midwest.
