PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gov. Gina Raimondo says rebuilding and modernizing schools will help spark an economic recovery and strengthen the state.

Raimondo has proposed spending $90 million on school construction aid in 2016. Her budget also proposes creating a building authority capital fund with $20 million to help local school districts support the construction or renovation of school buildings.

The state has a moratorium on school building construction, which Raimondo wants to lift.

Raimondo, along with local and state officials, visited the Pell Elementary School in Newport on Friday to highlight her proposal.

She says modernizing schools will put people back to work and provide safe, clean, warm and dry facilities for students.

Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed says ending the moratorium is a top priority.
