Groundbreaking on Old RI Navy Housing Project
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) – Federal officials and local housing advocates are hailing a project in North Kingstown to redevelop old Navy housing into environmentally friendly affordable homes for
families that were once homeless.
A celebration was held Monday for the development, called Kingstown Crossings I.
Rhode Island Housing, which provided $8.6 million for the project, says it will include 58 energy- and water-efficient units within walking distance of child care, recreation areas,
transportation and jobs.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Later, they plan to build 46 more units at the site. The project is also funded by federal money and private sources.
Sen. Jack Reed says the development will breathe new life into
the neighborhood and will be a huge upgrade for the community.
