Group organizes a rolling-rally calling on state to continue its moratorium on evictions

Rolling Rally

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Saturday, a car caravan made its way through the streets of Providence, calling on the state to continue its moratorium on evictions.

The group wants people who can’t afford their rent or mortgage because of the pandemic to be able to stay in their homes.

They say starting August 1 landlords will be able to once again evict their residents who are behind on rent. Other states are continuing to postpone evictions and they want Rhode Island to follow suit.

Organizer, Satya Mohapatra said, “When the first of August hits, people are going to get thrown out of the house. Housing is basic, and that’s why we’re mobilizing people to demand that we want to stop the evictions. If the neighboring state, Massachusetts, can do it, why can’t Rhode Island?”

The group is also calling for an end to what they call “racist police terror.”
