Guatemalan Community Leaders Call For Watson Resignation

Guatemalan community leaders in Providence called Thursday for Rhode Island House Minority Leader Robert Watson to step down from his leadership post.

Watson was arrested over the weekend in Connecticut on alcohol and marijuana charges.

He also drew the outrage of the Providence Guatemalan community in February for a controversial comment about “gay Guatemalans who smoke pot.”

“Representative Watson has to do the right thing and leave the Minority Leadership post for the good of his party,” said David A. Quiroa, President of the Guatemalan American-Alliance.  “However I do not think Rep. Watson should resign from his representative seat and his constituents should decide that during the next election.  I do wish him the best.  No one is perfect.”
