Handful arrested during protest outside Providence Public Complex

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE): A handful of people were arrested outside of the Providence Safety Complex during a protest on Saturday night.

Our ABC6 News camera captured several people being taken into custody after more than 100 protestors gathered outside. Dozens of police officers were seen with riot gear.

The protest calling to defund the police started around 8:30 p.m. outside the Providence Safety Complex but protestors marched towards Broad Street.

“Just look at them, they’re dressed to the nines in riot gear,” Justin Bloomberg, a protestor, said. “They’re over-funded. they’re not here serving the needs of the community.”

“They were throwing paint and objects at the police officers, smoke grenades, and some damage, but no officers were hurt,” Col. Hugh Clements Jr. with the Providence Police Dept. said.

On Thursday, two people were arrested outside the Providence Safety Complex after an event to “defend the police” was canceled.
