PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Hasbro Children’s Hospital is reminding people that children should never handle fireworks.

The hospital says about 2,500 children are treated in emergency rooms nationwide for firework-related injuries every July, as the nation marks Independence Day. More than half of those injuries are burns.

The hospital is encouraging families to help prevent avoidable injuries by letting the professionals handle fireworks.

The hospital says there are a number of tips for adults who light fireworks.

Among them, don’t put any type of fireworks or flammables near children; read all warning labels and follow the instructions on fireworks’ packages; and only light fireworks in a cool place and on a flat surface away from buildings, dry leaves and flammable materials.

Never re-light fireworks, keep a bucket of water handy and wear safety goggles.
