CRANSTON, R.I. – A hazmat scare at the Department of Corrections has the women’s facility on lockdown.

Eight people – five inmates and three staff members – were taken to the hospital after an unknown substance was found in the women’s facility, according to a DOC spokesperson. None of them presented any symptoms but were transported because of their proximity to the substance, as part of protocol.

"Everyone is safe,” said DOC Spokesperson J.R. Ventura. “We are implementing this as part of our safety protocol to ensure that everyone is safe."

Rescue crews from several area towns and cities responded.

The five inmates have been cleared by medical personnel and were returned to the facility, according to Ventura. The facility remains on lockdown until further notice.
