Health-Improved Bryant Pulls Away From Stony Brook Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sherif Gross-Bullock and Charles Pride each finished with 20-point outings and the Bryant University men’s basketball team tied a Division I program record for three pointers as the Bulldogs raced past Stony Brook, 79-60, on Friday night at the Chace Athletic Center.

Bryant snapped a two-game skid with the victory, hitting 17 three-pointers along the way. The Bulldogs tied the mark set previously on Jan. 22, 2011 at Monmouth. Bryant finished 17-of-37 from beyond the arc.

Gross-Bullock paced the Bulldogs, scoring 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. He also added 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double. Pride added 20 points, hitting 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Antwan Walker posted 14 points and five blocks, Tyler Brelsford posted eight points and six assists and Miles Latimer contributed nine points and five rebounds.

  • Stony Brook pulled within two, 45-43, with 13:45 remaining but the Bulldogs rattled off a 19-3 run to pull ahead for good. The run was highlighted by a Walker block that led to a Gross-Bullock transition three.

How it Happened

  • Bryant opened the game hot from beyond the arc as Pride and Brelsford (2) hit threes to give the Bulldogs an 11-3 lead.
  • Threes from Walker and Latimer pushed Bryant’s lead to 10, 17-7, with 12:08 to play.
  • A nearly 4:00 run without a basket for the Bulldogs allowed the Seawolves to close the gap.
  • The Seawolves would pull within three, 21-18, before Latimer drilled a transition three to answer. Pride then finished at the rim before drilling a three to make it 29-18 with 4:16 left.
  • Pride and Latimer would then swish consecutive threes to give the Bulldogs a 35-26 lead with 2:29 left.
  • Stony Brook would cut the deficit to 35-29 at the half.
  • Bryant opened with a furious push in the second half as Brelsford finished a beautiful drive to the hoop before Pride drilled a three from the wing to make it 40-29, forcing an SBU timeout.
  • The Seawolves, however, would eventually whittle the deficit to two, 45-43, with 13:45 left.
  • Gross-Bullock jump started a 19-3 run for the Bulldogs with a three and turned a turnover into a flush at the other end to push the lead to seven.
  • Bryant capped the run with an electrifying sequence from Walker and Gross-Bullock. On the defensive end, Walker met Aaron Clarke at the rim for an emphatic block. Gross-Bullock collected the rebound and raced down the floor, pulling up for three from the top to send the Chace into a frenzy.
  • Threes from SGB and Pride at the 6:00 mark made the lead 18 and Doug Edert’s triple from the corner pushed the lead to 21, 76-55, with 3:46 left.

  • Bryant now owns a 2-1 advantage in the Division I series with Stony Brook. The Bulldogs have won both games in Smithfield.

  • The Black and Gold tied a Division I single-game program record with 17 three pointers. The mark had been set on Jan. 22, 2011 at Monmouth.
  • Bryant’s three-point performance came one game after the Bulldogs went 8-of-39 from three at Cincinnati.
  • Pride finished in double-figures for the 63rd time in his 93-game career. He scored 20 points for the fourth time this season and the 19th time in his career.
  • Pride now has 1,273 points and 644 rebounds in his career.
  • Walker scored in double-figures for the eighth consecutive game and for the ninth time this season.
  • Gross-Bullock has now scored in double figures in all 10 games this season. It marks his 32nd-career double-digit effort. SGB now has three two-point games this season and six in his career.
