PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island health officials say a second student at Providence College may have meningococcal meningitis.

The state Department of Health announced it has received a report of a probable case of meningitis at the college. The student was admitted to the hospital.

If confirmed, it will be the second case. The department reported a confirmed case of meningitis at the school Monday. Officials said then that the student was improving after being admitted to a Boston area hospital.

People who came into close contact with both students were given antibiotics.

The department says it’s coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the college.

The student health center is staying open longer to interview and treat students who came into close contact with the students.
