Heavy rain causes flooding in parts of Southern New England

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Heavy rain is expected throughout the day Monday — and it has already caused flooding in parts of Southern New England.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said Monday Route 10 at Union Avenue in Providence was shut down because of flooding.

Rhode Island State Police were helping those who were stuck. Drivers were advised to find alternative routes, such as Interstate 95.

The heavy rain could lead up to two inches of rain is expected, and more is possible.

The National Weather Service Boston issued a flood warning until 3 p.m. Monday for parts of the Ocean State, including Bristol, Kent, Providence, and Washington counties.

In Massachusetts, a flood warning was also issued for Bristol County.

A flood watch is in effect for Rhode Island through Tuesday morning.

Early Monday, the DOT urged Rhode Islanders not to drive through standing water. Drivers were advised to drive slower than normal and stay aware of any flooded roadways.
