Help name the baby red panda at Buttonwood Park Zoo

Bpzoo's Red Panda Cub Needs A Name!

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE)– The baby red panda at Buttonwood Park Zoo is getting ready to make his public debut– but first he needs a name.

So the zoo is asking ABC6 viewers and panda supporters to vote on what his name should be.

After receiving dozens of entries, the choices have been narrowed down to five finalists.

Some of the names pay tribute to New Bedford’s history– like Herman Melville, the author of “Moby Dick.”  Another choice, Kodo, recognizes the red panda’s native habitat. The word means “grain” in Nepalese.

More information can be found on the Buttonwood Park Zoo website, and you can vote from the full list of names here.

Voting ends on September 1.
