NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – A hidden painting has been discovered on the ceiling of what was once a Newport mansion, and is now the administration building at Salve Regina University.

The Newport Daily News reports the painting was discovered this week by a team that included preservation students visiting from Clemson University and the College of Charleston in South Carolina. The university allowed them to remove two layers of paint from the ceiling of what had been Ochre Court's ballroom.

Underneath, they discovered a painting on canvas.

Robert Russell, director of Salve's Cultural and Historic Preservation Program, speculates that Richard Morris Hunt, the celebrated architect who designed Ochre Court in the 1890s, may have commissioned it in France.

He says they now need to raise the money to restore it.
