Hopkinton Police arrest suspects in multiple armed robbery cases

HOPKINTON, R.I. (WLNE) – Hopkinton Police and Rhode Island State Police arrested two adults and three juveniles on armed robbery, firearm and drug charges Friday evening.
Hopkinton Police responded to Spicer’s Marketplace at 206 Main Street around 6:25 p.m. Friday for reports of an armed robbery. Police said two suspects entered the convenience store with a handgun and demanded money before fleeing.
Police obtained a description of the suspects’ vehicle, and at approximately 6:35 p.m. a patrolman observed the suspect vehicle on Wheeler Road and attempted to conduct a felony car stop.
After a short pursuit the vehicle was stopped and the occupants were taken into custody. Police seized a loaded 9mm handgun as well as several baggies of suspected crack cocaine.
Hopkinton Police identified the two adult suspects as Jeffrey Wheeler, 29, of East Lyme, CT, and Benjamin Ibbitson, 18, of New London, CT.
The suspects face charges of 1st degree armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, and possession of crack cocaine.
According to Hopkinton Police Wheeler and Ibbitson were also suspects in an armed robbery shortly before 4:00 p.m. Friday at Rhode Island Nail Salon in West Warwick.
Wheeler and Ibbitson were arraigned at the Hopkinton Police Department and sent to the ACI. They are set to appear in 4th District Court Monday.
The juvenile suspects were ordered to be held at the training school and will be arraigned by a Family Court judge on Monday.
