PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- As Rhode Island and Massachusetts prepare for potential heavy winter snowfall, power outages could occur across the area.

If you need to report a power outage, here are the phone numbers:

National Grid: 1-800-465-1212

Eversource: 1-800-286-2000

NSTAR: 1-800-592-2000

BI Utility: 401-466-5851

If you experience a power outage here are some tips to stay safe:

  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed
  • Use a generator, but only outdoors and away from windows
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid an electrical surge
  • Check for local locations that offer heated shelter
