Hundreds fill Providence bar to celebrate USA soccer victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Hundreds filled Brass Monkey in Providence Tuesday afternoon to watch the Unites States Men’s Soccer Team advance to the knockout stage after a 1-0 victory over Iran.

Neil Caswell was one of many who are part of the men’s teams official fan club the “American Outlaws.”

“There’s been hundreds of people coming out to these games and now we have another one coming our way,” Caswell said.

Brass Monkey was filled from the beginning, with fans doing everything they can to make a 2 p.m. start on a Tuesday.

” I had a quiz I took in about 20 minutes just to get here in time, but turns out I aced it,” said one fan.

“I got my son out of school today completely, he had a half day, but I said it’s a no day we’re going to cheer on the U.S.,” said another.

The excitement for soccer comes at a time where Rhode Island is just over a year away from having their own USL soccer team Rhode Island F.C.

The team’s president, Brett Luy, hopes the momentum will boost interest for the team’s kickoff in 2024.

“Hopefully, a deep run for the U.S. will benefit us immensely, success on the U.S. field only benefits us and builds momentum and excitement and we’ll ride that as long as we can,” Luy said.
