WESTPORT, R.I. (WLNE) – With Hurricane Chris making his way up the coast, the risk of rip currents has increased forcing Horseneck Beach to temporarily shut down.

The Massachusetts DCR announced the beach would be closing at 6 p.m. on July 11, due to "high surf conditions and the risk of strong rip currents developing."

Gooseberry Island is also closed at this time.

The conditions of the beach will be reevaluated on Thursday July 12 to see if the beach is safe for reopening.
