Hurricane Iota is rapidly evolving into a major hurricane as it approaches Central America, where it’s expected to make landfall as a Category 4 storm Monday night.

Iota has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph.

The storm is also expected to have a life-threatening storm surge of 10 to 15 feet along with rainfall of 1 to 2 feet, according to an advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Meteorologists predict the storm to make landfall near or over Providencia Island Monday, bringing hurricane conditions as it takes aim at the Nicaraguan and Honduran coasts.

Iota is threatening many hard-hit areas of Central America, where people are still recovering from Hurricane Eta.
