Inmate escapes from work release, surrenders to police

An inmate surrenders to police after escaping from his work release program Saturday night.
Rhode Island State police say 53 year old Michael A. Russo, who last resided in Johnston, surrendered to police on August 23rd at 12 a.m. when he contacted the Minimum Security Unit from his work release program after failing to return to the unit located on 21 Humbert Street in North Providence on August 22nd shortly before 8:40 p.m.
Russo is being charged with Escape from a Correctional Institution. He was arraigned at the State Police Lincoln Woods barracks then returned to the ACI.
Authorities say they checked several locations before Russo contacted them saying he wanted to return to his workplace.
He is serving a five year sentence for Felony Assault
