Inside Foxwooods, Mohegan Sun casinos prior to June 1 re-opening

MASHANTUCKET, CT (WLNE) — Connecticut’s casinos are set to re-open to the public on June 1, despite pleas from the governor for them to wait.

Both the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes say they’ve made several changes to ensure safety at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos.

At both locations, visitors will have to pass through security upon entry and have their temperatures read and their hands sanitized. Both casinos are requiring customers and employees to wear masks at all times.

Elevators have a 4-person limit and social distancing markers can be found throughout the casinos. Many slot machines will be turned off to ensure social distancing.

Mohegan Sun has even installed UV light devices in their air ducts, while Foxwoods has plexiglass dividers separating gamblers and dealers at table games.

All tables, machines, and chips will be disinfected regularly.

“Safety and security always come number one for us,” said Jason Guyot, interim CEO and Senior VP of Resort Operations at Foxwoods Casino. “We’ve used that in the thought process of creating out new protocols,” he explained.

While the casinos feel they’ve taken necessary measures, Connecticut governor, Ned Lamont isn’t thrilled.

“I think it’s incredibly risky,” Lamont said at his Thursday press briefing. “It’s risky for the people who work at the casinos, it’s risky for the people who go to the casinos,” he said.

In Rhode Island, Governor Gina Raimondo is fearful of the financial impact the June 1st opening will have on her state’s casinos.

“It’s unfortunate,” Raimondo said Thursday. “It will put us at a bit of a disadvantage. We’re not going to be ready by June 1 to safely re-open Twin River [casino],” she said.

“Whether it’s mid-June or July 1, I’m not quite ready to say,” Raimondo said of the Ocean State’s two casinos, which are owned and operated by Twin River Worldwide Holding.

In Connecticut, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos are built on sovereign lands and operated by the tribes.

Foxwoods expects to open at 25% capacity on June 1, while Mohegan Sun will open at 50% capacity.
