It’s not just COVID-19 vaccine that causes reaction, experts say
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A reaction from the COVID-19 vaccine—or other vaccines—is a normal immune response, according to Rhode Island health experts.
Some viewers contacted ABC6 after experiencing a low-grade fever, lethargy or flu-like symptoms after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine; an indication the vaccine works and your immune system is responding, according to health officials.
“I think it’s probably a little more common than we think it is. I just think there’s a lot of attention on the COVID vaccine,” Dr. Philip Chan with the state’s health department said. “I’m also reminded that other vaccines, like the shingles vaccine, the zoster vaccine some of these other vaccines that aren’t even as common as the flu vaccine do give people even more side effects than the COVID vaccines do.”
According to Dr. Chan, there are also millions of people receiving the COVID-19 vaccine right now, so that’s another reason there would be more reports about reactions to the vaccine all around the same time.
As of late last week, Dr. Chan said, more than 250,000 people in Rhode Island were fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
