Ivy League Favorite Brown Volleyball Finishes First Weekend 2-1


Brown volleyball split two matches on Saturday to bring the first weekend of the season for the Bears to a close. Brown dropped a five-set match to Air Force in the morning before beating Siena in the nightcap.

The Bears dropped the first game of the day in a five-set battle to the Falcons, falling to Air Force, 25-16, 22-25, 26-28, 25-22, 13-15.

Sophia Miller led the Bears with 22 kills and hit .347. Jilienne Widener tallied 16 kills and Kate Sheire added 11. Kate Danaher guided Brown’s offense with 53 assists. The Bears finished the game hitting .226.

Victoria Vo led the Brown defense with 24 digs. Danaher and Jessie Golden each had nine digs and Miller added eight. At the net, Gabby Derrick finished with five blocks, while Beau Vanderlaan and Danaher each had three.

Brown was in control of the first set, using an early 7-1 run to jump ahead 11-8. Holding a 13-12 lead, Brown used another big run. Kills by Sheire and Beau Vanderlaan kickstarted the run and Jessie Golden added two service aces to push the lead to 20-12. Brown wasn’t done as a block by Vanderlaan and Danaher and a kill by Miller put the Bears up 11.

The Bears defense held Air Force to -.038 hitting in the first set but the Falcons offense responded, hitting over .300 in three of the last four sets.

With Air Force leading 11-9 in the second set, Brown went on a 7-1 run to go ahead 16-12. The Bears were up 18-14 before an Air Force used a 4-0 run to tie the set. Kills by Widener and Sheire put the Bears back up 22-20 but Air Force scored five-straight points to tie the match.

Set three went back-and-forth with Brown jumping ahead 22-20 after kills from Sheire and Vanderlaan. Brown earned set point with a kill by Miller but Air Force responded with two-straight points. Widener fought of two Air Force set points with kills but the Falcons would eventually take set three and a 2-1 lead in the match.

An early 6-0 run put Brown in trouble in the fourth set but the Bears used a 6-0 run of its own, featuring two kills by Miller and a kill by Widener and Sheire to take a 13-12 lead. Down 18-15, Brown went on another run with seven-straight points. A kill by Vanderlaan and an error from Air Force gave Brown set point and Miller would add a kill to force a fifth and deciding set.

The Bears fell behind 7-3 early in the fifth but a kill and ace by Vanderlaan helped Brown pull back within one. Later in the set, a block by Gabby Derrick and Sheire followed by a kill from Victoria Vo tied the set at 11. The Bears took a 13-12 lead after kills by Sheire and Miller but a kill and two blocks from Air Force ended the match for the Falcons.

Three Bears finished with double-figure kills as Brown beat Siena in four sets to close out play on the weekend. Sophia Miller led the Bears with 15 kills and added 13 digs for a double-double. Kate Sheire and Jilienne Widener finished with 12 and 10, respectively. It was a strong offensive showing for the Bears, who hit .313 as a team. Miller hit .400, followed by Sheire (.360) and Widener (.308).

Kate Danaher guided the Bears offense with 37 assists and added a team-high 15 digs for a double-double. Victoria Vo was second on the team with 14 digs.

Brown began the game incomplete control, starting the game on a 12-1 run. Brown had three blocks during the run with Vanderlaan taking part in all three blocks. Later in the set, kills by Miller Widener and Sheire pushed the lead to 21-10. Widener finished off the set with a kill as the Bears took set one 25-13.

The Bears were up 9-8 before back-to-back kills by Miller started a 5-0 run that finished with two aces by Danaher. An ace by Miller, a block by Widener and Gabby Derrick and a kill by Derrick put Brown up 18-10. Vo had two aces during six-point run that gave Brown set point. Sheire finished the set with a kill.

Brown fell behind early in the third set but battled back to make the score 10-9 in favor of Siena with a 5-1 run. The Bears allowed a couple of runs by Siena that allowed the Saints to take control of the set, falling 25-19 in the third.

Set four went back-and-forth with the teams tied at 11 until Brown went on a run with kills by Sheire and Miller to go up 15-11. Holding a one-point lead, a kill by Miller and an ace by Jessie Golden helped the Bears go on another 4-0 run. Up 23-20, Widener picked up a kill and Danaher finished off the match with a kill.

Brown will be on the road for the first time this season with a midweek matchup at Bryant on Tuesday (Sept. 6). The matchup against the Bulldogs will begin at 7:30 p.m.
