WESTERLY, R.I. (WLNE)- A detective from the Johnston Police Department was arrested in Westerly early on Saturday morning after a domestic dispute.

Detective Steven Lopez, 57, was arrested at his home in Westerly and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Westerly Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on Sunny Drive at about 11 p.m. on Friday night.

Officers arrived at the scene and were met outside by Lopez’s wife. She told them that she had been assaulted by Lopez during an argument, he then went back into the house and shut off all of the lights.

Police said that they tried to talk to Lopez at the scene and didn’t get any response.

A SWAT team was assembled as officers continued to try and make contact with Lopez.

At 2:45 a.m. the team entered the house through the garage and called for Lopez.

He came down from the second floor and was taken into to custody without incident.

Lopez will be arraigned in Fourth Division District Court on Friday.

Johnston Police Chief Joseph Razza tells ABC6 that Lopez is on paid administrative leave “pending the outcome of an internal personnel matter.”
