Johnston man arrested, charged in gas station robberies

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A Johnston man was arrested Tuesday and charged in connection with a pair of robberies at local gas stations.

Johnston Police responded to a Mobil gas station located at 1897 Plainfield Street around 11:30 p.m. for reports of a robbery. An hour later, officers were called to the Shell station at 525 Killingly Street to respond to a second robbery.

Police were able to obtain a description of the suspect and vehicle involved in both robberies, assisted in their investigation by Providence and Cranston Police Departments.

Officers were able to take 40-year-old Earl C. Sanford into custody at a third gas station, located at 200 Union Avenue, without incident.

Sanford was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of first degree robbery. He was ordered held without bail.
