Judge Caprio remembered for kindness ahead of funeral
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mourners lined the inside of the convention center in Providence Thursday afternoon to pay their respects to Judge Frank Caprio.
People from all over the world shared grief and sorrow for the lost judge, but also joy as they looked back at his legacy.
“In 2025, with all the divide going on in the world, he showed if you can live life with pure intention,” Ed Brady said. “Just by living good, you can inspire, and thousands of people are here to show love and respect to his beautiful legacy and family.”
The judge died on Aug. 20 at the age of 88 after a long battle with cancer.
Caprio’s impacts were felt strongly at home in Rhode Island, where he was born and raised, and those who knew him in his early days said he’d been changing lives for decades.
“In 1973, at 16-years-old, I was a page in the Constitutional Convention here in Rhode Island, and I met then attorney Frank Caprio,” Paul Lebon said. “He guided me through my college years and through my career.”
Mourners said it’s the way Caprio treated people of all backgrounds that has left its mark on entire communities.
“Judge Caprio took care over everybody, irregardless of color, irregardless of immigration status,” Joseph Buchanan said. “He was a man that took justice into his hands and did the right thing with it.”
Caprio’s funeral will be held on Aug. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
