Judge says Board of Education must open NECAP meetings to public

Governor Lincoln Chafee and the State Board of Education Chairwoman Eva-Marie Mancuso are proposing an entire two–day Board of Education retreat be open to the public.

Judge Daniel Procaccini sided with the Rhode Island ACLU Tuesday saying that conversations regarding concerning the standardized test graduation requirement must be open to the public.

Last week, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the state Board of Education, saying its upcoming private retreat where officials will be discussing the test violates Rhode Island's open meeting laws.

The judge agreed, saying if the board wants to discuss NECAP tests and graduation requirements it has to do it in an open public forum.
