Jury finds Providence man guilty in 2019 kidnapping death case

BOSTON (WLNE) — A federal jury found Louis Coleman guilty in a 2019 kidnapping case.

Jassy Correia, of Boston, went missing in February from the Boston nightclub Venu, where she was celebrating her birthday. Her body was found inside a suitcase in the back of Coleman’s car in Delaware.

Jurors in the Boston courtroom did not reach a verdict after closing arguments Tuesday. A spokesperson for the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts said Wednesday that a juror “violated instructions concerning outside research.”

Coleman, who’s from Providence, was charged with one count of kidnapping resulting in death and faces life in prison or the death penalty.

Massachusetts abolished the death penalty back in 1984, but Coleman is being tried federally, which is why the death penalty is a possibility.

His sentencing is set for Sept. 22.
