UPDATE: Kobe Bryant, daughter among 9 killed in helicopter crash
CALABASAS (Calif.): Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas Sunday morning.
Kobe Bryant is among nine people who died in the crash according to ABC News.
Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, died alongside her father, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.
The names of the other victims, which includes six additional passengers and the pilot, will not be publicly identified until next-of-kin are notified, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told reporters.
The Sikorsky S-76 helicopter crashed under unknown circumstances according to a spokesperson from the National Transportation Saftey Board.
According to Los Angeles County Fire Captain, Tony Imbrenda, witnesses who were mountain biking in the area saw the helicopter in distress.
At this time it is unclear who the helicopter belonged to or where it originated from.
“Kobe Bryant was a giant who inspired, amazed, and thrilled people everywhere with his incomparable skill on the court – and awed us with his intellect and humility as a father, husband creative genius, and ambassador for the game he loved. He will live forever in the heart of Los Angeles and will be remembered through the ages as one of our greatest heroes. This is the moment that leaves us struggling to find words that express the magnitude of of shock and sorrow we are all feeling right now, and I am keeping Kobe’s entire family in my prayers at this time of grief”, said Los Angelas Mayor, Eric Garcetti.
Kobe Bryant was 41 years old.
LeBron James surpassed Bryant’s all-time scoring record on Saturday during the Lakers’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Bryant commented on James’ performance last night on twitter.
