PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Drivers can expect some changes Friday morning along 195 in Providence.

Over night crews began splitting the lanes so the Rhode Island Department of Transportation can make bridge repairs over the next few weeks. Construction was slated to begin Thursday, but the DOT pushed it back to warn drivers about the new changes being implemented.

The biggest takeaway for drivers is to stay in your lane.

Those changes will be implemented on 195 East to the Exit 2 on Gano and India Street.

Three lanes will be shifted to the left and one lane to the right. Those lanes will continue through 195 East.

This is all part of the DOT’s $3.2 million construction project.

RIDOT’s director, Peter Alviti, asked drivers to be patient and remain alert during these changes.

“The key thought here is if everyone stays in there lane and doesn’t do last minute shifts they will eventually after the work zone go back into the original lanes that they were in,” said Alviti.

The maintenance work is supposed to be completed by the end of the year. During this time, drivers should take note that Sunday through Thursday night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Exit 2 on Gano Street will be closed during this construction.

Also, drivers traveling on 95 South onto 195 East cannot merge onto Exit 2. The DOT says to use Exit 5 to reverse direction and use 195 West, Exit 3.
