Layaway Angel Saves Christmas For Dozens of People

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – It’s no secret this pandemic has taken its toll on people in different ways. “It’s been really tough on my family.”

Especially for Matthew Johnson, a father of two from Warwick.

“It’s been my life long dream to open my barbershop. I did in February and then the pandemic shut us down in March,” says Johnson.

Months out of work putting a major financial strain on this dad, whose only wish is to give his children the best Christmas he can. So, he headed to the Walmart on Post Road with a plan.

“I found the gifts they wanted and used layaway, which I never have used before. I put a small amount of money down,” says Johnson.

On Sunday night, the day before he planned to pay off his tab, he got a phone call.

“They told me someone paid my bill of 400 dollars. At first I thought it was a friend, or coworker, but they told me it was a complete stranger,” explains Johnson.

The good deed didn’t end there. The so called layaway stranger paying off another 4-thousand dollars worth of gifts for families in need.

“It’s such an amazing gesture, thank you! Merry Christmas and God Bless,” adds Johnson.

Johnson tells ABC 6 News he’s going to pay it forward on Saturday, by giving free haircuts to kids at his barbershop in Warwick called Matty J’s.
