ABC's Dancing With the Stars co-host, Brooke Burke-Charvet, was all smiles as she dazzled the audience tonight. It's her first show since going public with her thyroid cancer diagnosis.

There was no outward mention of her cancer on tonight's episode. But inside Burke-Charvet trying to wrap her head around the rare diagnosis.

“I got my results back and they were not good. And I need to have thyroid surgery and have a thyroidectomy,” said Burke-Charvet who opened up about her battle with thyroid cancer. She posted a video called 'Cancer. Me?' on her Modern Mom blog last week.

“I guess the truth is I'm so used to being in control and taking care of everybody, and all my kids, and now I find myself in this really out of control situation,” said Burke-Charvet.

But what's in store for the 41-year-old mother of 4? ABC6 sat down with Dr. Arvin Glicksman of the Rhode Island Cancer Council, who has nothing to do with Burke-Charvet's treatment, but who has cared for numerous cancer patients.

“It's not very common. It's a relatively infrequent cancer,” said Dr. Glicksman.

Younger woman are most at risk for getting thyroid cancer getting it about four times more often than men. Your thyroid controls metabolism, growth and development.

“If you don't have enough thyroid you can get sluggish, mentally as well as physically,” said Dr. Glicksman.

Burke-Charvet's cancer was discovered during a regular physical. The treatment is to remove part, or all of the thyroid.

While it may leave a scar, the prognosis for the TV host is good.

“Doctors say that this like a good kind of cancer to have. Good cancer! That sounds so crazy. But my doctor did tell me that this is a happily ever after ending kind of thing,” said Burke-Charvet.

Burke-Charvet has already scheduled her surgery, which doctors say is relatively simple.

She's not saying exactly when it will happen, but it will likely take place after the Dancing With the Stars finally in two weeks.
