PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Choyon Manjrekar is a three-time Jeopardy champion still processing Alex Trebek’s cancer diagnosis.

“It feels like tragedy has struck someone close to you, someone that you know,” Manjrekar said. “I kind of think of him as the guide through a lot of what were special moments for me.”

One of those moments even went viral when Manjrekar responded to a final Jeopardy clue with a humorous answer, and Trebek responded with a joke.

“Having to answer questions from Alex was something you know you’re not going to be doing a lot so you try and make the most out of it,” the champion said.

Manjrekan said he found Trebek intelligent and authentic.

“He’s pretty smart himself.,” he said. “His personality was exactly the way you see him on TV. And that’s what I liked, which is that there were no surprises.”

But the surprise of the diagnosis has many fans struggling to imagine the show without its icon.

“It’s been a fixture in our lives as long as we can remember, probably a lot longer than a lot of us have been alive. So just knowing that something may change, that something may be different – it kind of hurts.”

But Manjrekar is willing to place a wager on Trebek’s speedy recovery.

“I just have a good feeling,” he said. “I think that he will beat the odds.”
