Local police departments head to CT for funeral services for 2 fallen officers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department plans on sending 35 officers to East Hartford on Friday for the funeral services for Lieutenant Dustin Demonte and Sergeant Alex Hamzy.
The two Connecticut police officers were killed in the line of duty last week after receiving a phony report of a domestic disturbance. They were ambushed and shot when they got to the scene.
Providence police plan on making their presence known on Friday in support of the Bristol Police Department.
“As always, Providence police is well represented at these police funerals,” said Colonel Hugh Clements.
Senator Jack Reed noted the dangers of the job and emphasized the importance of providing officers with proper funding to ensure their safety.
“There’s a danger and we want to minimize that danger and provide them equipment,” said the Senator.
In addition to Providence, other police departments like Johnston, Cranston, and State Police also told ABC6 News they plan to send officers to the services.
