Lost hard hat belonging to Conrad Roy’s father washed ashore in the Azores on Father’s Day

FAIRHAVEN, M.A. (WLNE) — It was a special Father’s Day for a Fairhaven man thanks to a surprise gift that washed up on the shores of Portugal and found its way to him on social media.

Conrad Roy Jr. received a notification on Facebook on Father’s Day that his hard-hat had washed up on the shores of the Azores, an archipelago off the coast of Portugal.

“I just started crying because I felt like it was a gift from our son,” Roy Jr. said. “It came on Father’s Day when I really wasn’t looking forward to the day.”

Roy Jr. says he lost his hard-hat in the water back in 2014, while working on a site off the coast of New Bedford.

Roy Jr. was working with his son, Conrad Roy III, that day. Roy III died by suicide just a few months later.

Roy III’s former girlfriend, Michelle Carter, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a high-profile case for urging then 18-year-old Conrad to kill himself through a series of text messages.

“I just happened to see this post and I’m like “Wow, that looks like my hard hat,”” said Roy Jr.  “Then I started reading it and I’m like “Oh my gosh that is my hard hat!””

The hard-hat was found by a Portuguese woman named Sandra Machado, who found it on the beach of Porto Formoso on São Miguel Island in the Azores.

“I saw something in the waves,” Machado told WCVB News. “I went to pick it up and saw a helmet and the sticker say it was New Bedford.”

She then posted photos of the hard-hat to Facebook and shared them on Roy’s company’s page.

“This brought me some happiness this Father’s Day,” Roy Jr. said.

After hearing his story, Machado said she was happy her actions brought him joy.

“I’m happy for helping the family to have some kind of peace,” she said.

Roy Jr. says he has no plans of getting his hard-hat back, but was just happy to see it was found.

He says he has been considering visiting Azores for a while and may go to retrieve it.
