Man, 18, killed in highway crash in East Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police said an 18-year-old was killed in a crash on Interstate 195 in East Providence early Sunday morning.

Authorities said they responded to a single-car crash at about 2:20 a.m.

They said a Honda sedan, driven by 18-year-old Jefferson Zaid Lara Romeo, lost control in the heavy rain.

Evidence shows Romeo’s car went across all three lanes, left the roadway, and struck a large rock.

Police said the car then traveled back left across all three lanes and struck a high-speed barrier where it stopped.

First responders pulled Romeo from the car and transported him to Rhode Island Hospital where he later died.

Officials said Romeo was from Spain but was staying with family living in Providence.
