Man accused of throwing woman into campfire in Fairhaven

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WLNE) — A New Bedford man is accused of throwing a woman into a campfire in Fairhaven.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. Monday on Long Road.

Police said that when they arrived at the scene, they found a woman with burns on her upper body.

The woman, police said, told officers she was attacked by Robert McWilliams, who she knew.

McWilliams, 45, is accused of throwing her into the campfire and holding her there.

Police said she was able to escape to get help. She was taken to the hospital for her injuries. Her condition wasn’t immediately released.

Williams was later found in a wooded area nearby where the assaults allegedly happened, police said.

The 45-year-old was arrested and charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, intimidation of a witness, assault with intent to kill.

Williams was arraigned Tuesday in New Bedford District Court.
