File: Providence Police

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Providence police were dispatched to the intersection of Atwells Avenue and Valley Street Saturday night for a disturbance between two men, one with a machete.

When officers arrived, they were unable to locate the suspects, but were quickly alerted that a man had been brought to Roger Williams Hospital after being assaulted with a machete.

At the hospital, officers spoke with 55-year-old Ernesto Montesino. Montesino said he was driving on Atwells Avenue near Cutler Street when he observed a black male, who he only knows by his street name “Batman”, assaulting an unidentified woman.

Montesino said he attempted to stop the subject from further assaulting the woman when the suspect then attacked him with a machete. He says he was able to defend himself with a stick before bringing himself to the hospital.

Officers observed a severe laceration on Montesino’s arm.

Police then headed to the intersection of Atwells Avenue and Cutler Street, where they located the suspect sitting on the steps of a home, with a machete next to him.

The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Andrew Moten.

Moten was charged with felony assault and sent to the ACI.
