Man arrested after shooting in Newport apartment complex

A Newport man is under arrest after a shooting at an apartment complex Tuesday night.

Police say they were called to the Bayside Village Apartment complex on Third Street at around 9;20 p.m. for multiple reports of shots fired.

On arrival they found a 23-year-old Middletown man who had been shot three times in the lower legs. He was transported to Newport Hospital and later Rhode Island Hospital. His condition has not been released.

Police say they later arrested 20-year-old Newport resident Elijah D. Weeden. He was charged with Possession of a Handgun without a License, Possession of a Firearm with Altered Serial Number, and Possession of Cocaine, and Possession of Marijuana under 1 ounce. Police are still investigating to determine if the handgun recovered from Weeden was involved in the shooting.
