Man arrested after striking, biting Providence Police officers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A 32-year-old man faces multiple charges after Police say he assaulted a pair of officers late Saturday night in Providence.

Providence Police officers responded to the area of Elmgrove and President Avenues shortly before 11:45 p.m. for reports of an emotionally distressed male subject.

Police told ABC6 that officers on scene attempted to convince the subject to allow them to transport him to the hospital to be evaluated.

According to Police while the subject was initially compliant, he soon became combative and attacked the officers.

One officer was struck and another was bitten by the subject.

Police said the officer that was bitten was treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital.

The subject was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation before being arraigned on one charge Simple Assault and one charge of Felony Assault on the officers.
