A man was seriously injured in Fall River Wednesday after he was attacked by a pit bull.

Police say the owner of the pit bull, named Rex, was attempting to clean his cage at a residence on Charles Street when the dog got loose, ran into the victim’s room, and attacked him.

The victim, a 58-year-old man who also resided in the home, sustained multiple bite wounds throughout his body.

Rex’s owner attempted to pry the dog off the victim and was eventually able to separate them.

When officers arrived, they observed blood on the walls, floor, and furniture. The victim was also covered in blood. Crews administered first aid before taking him to St. Ann’s Hospital in Fall River, and then to Rhode Island Hospital. He is listed in stable condition.

Fall River Police Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of the dog. The incident is still under investigation.
