A suspect has been apprehended in connection to last week’s murder in New Bedford.

The Bristol District Attorney’s office say 18-year-old Syrelle Grace, of Taunton, was held without bail Monday morning following an arraignment on murder charges following the shooting of Marcelo Francois, 19.

Police responded after gunshots were reported in the area of Liberty and Court Streets around 11:30 p.m. near Harrington Park. Upon arrival, officers located Francois suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Loved ones have been lighting candles in the park where Francois was found, saying he was a father of two who loved playing basketball.

“He was really loyal. He always had people’s backs. A good, all-around, kid. Somebody that you’d want to be around,” said Kameron Britt, a friend of Francois.

This is the city’s second murder of the year.

Grace was arraigned at the New Bedford District Court and held without bail. He is due back in court July 29.
