PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man serving a life sentence for bludgeoning a furniture store owner to death with a hammer in 1982 has been denied parole.

The Rhode Island Parole Board denied parole for James Hughes III for the seventh time on Wednesday.

The now 64-year-old Hughes was convicted in 1983 of killing 79-year-old Howard “Zeke’” Harris in 1982.

Authorities say Harris caught Hughes rummaging through his desk at his North Kingstown store, and when Harris caught him in the act, Hughes used the hammer to attack the victim.

He got away with only about $70.

Hughes was last denied parole in 2014.

He will be eligible to go before the board for the eighth time in August 2022.
