Man, formerly of Newport, sentenced for possessing child pornography

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — United States Attorney Zachary Cunha said Thursday that a man who accessed and uploaded child pornography while living in Newport has been sentenced to prison.

Cunha said that 41-year-old Craig Mulvey was sentenced Wednesday to serve 42 months in prison, followed by eight years of probation, for possessing child pornography.

Homeland Security Investigations was first tipped off by a social media platform that a user was uploading child pornography to the site back in May of 2020. Agents traced that account, which had 11 pictures and 13 videos containing underage children, back to Mulvey’s IP address.

In October of that year, agents executed a search of Mulvey’s home and arrested him after finding pictures and videos of children on his laptop.

Mulvey plead guilty to possession of child pornography during a court hearing on Aug. 6, 2021.

Two months later, he was arrested by Providence police on a Rhode Island state charge of domestic violence.
